Es un documental de una hora, hecho para la televisión, sobre el legendario Lalo Guerrero, considerado el padre de la música chicana.

Su trayectoria y repertorio hacen transitar al espectador por setenta años de historia mexicana y chicana, incluyendo la repatriación, los disturbios de Zoot Suit, las luchas sindicales del UFW, la minifalda y la problemática chicana, con su orgullo y prejuicios. La música de Guerrero refleja todo esto a través de un sinnúmero espléndido de géneros musicales, como la ranchera, el boogie, la salsa, el norteño, el chachachá y sus hermosos boleros. El documental presenta fotos pocas veces vistas, material fílmico histórico y actuaciones musicales, que dan vida a este documental variado y ecléctico. El mismo Lalo nos cuenta su vida de manera única, con calidez, un gran sentido del humor y a través de su música. Artistas y activistas influidos por este símbolo musical chicano comparten con el público muchas historias. Linda Ronstadt, Paul Rodríguez, Edward James Olmos, Ry Cooder, Dolores Huerta – cofundadora con César Chávez del UFW– Cheech Marín, Luis Valdez, el grupo Culture Clash y el conjunto Los Lobos ofrecen un retrato penetrante de este pionero musical.

Lalo Guerrero The Original Chicano is a one-hour television documentary about the legendary “Father of Chicano Music”. His career and songbook guide the viewer through seven decades of Mexican-American/Chicano history from Repatriation, the Zoot Suit riots, the UFW union’s struggle, the miniskirt and Chicano pride and prejudice. Guerrero captured it all in a dazzling array of musical genres including rancheras, boogie, salsa, norteño, cha-chas and beautiful boleros. Rare photographs, historic footage and music performances bring this eclectic tapestry to life. Lalo tells his own story on camera as no one else could –with warmth, unique humor and music. Artists and activists influenced by the late Chicano icon share their personal stories.
